Staying in Big Powderhorn Village

If the cam looks good, the hill is twenty minutes from a bed. Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort rents houses and condominiums at the base and in Caribou Village, from one-bedroom units sleeping four up to houses sleeping fourteen.

See lodging at Big Powderhorn Mountain

This is the live chairlift camera at Big Powderhorn Mountain in Bessemer, Michigan — a real-time view of the lift line and the runs beside it. It is one of three cameras on the hill, and the one that shows you whether people are actually skiing.

What you can tell from this camera

Whether it is snowing right now, how much is on the chairs and the lift towers, how long the line is, and what the light is doing. On a lake-effect day the snow is often visibly falling through the frame.

What it cannot tell you is base depth. A flat grey image early on a January morning is usually low light, not thin cover.

The other two cameras

The mountaintop cam is the one for visibility and wind up high — the summit can be socked in while the base looks fine. The Double Barrel cam points down one of the steeper runs and is the only view that shows an actual snow surface, fresh or tracked out.

Why the cameras beat a forecast here

Big Powderhorn sits in the Lake Superior snow belt, where weather is intensely local. It can be snowing hard at the mountain while Ironwood twelve miles down the road is clear, so a county forecast tells you very little. The cameras tell you what is happening on the hill, right now.

If it looks good

The mountain has 45 runs served by nine chairlifts across two peaks.
