See lodging at Big Powderhorn Mountain

This is the live view from the summit of Big Powderhorn Mountain in Bessemer, Michigan. Of the three cameras on the hill, this is the one that tells you about visibility and wind.

Read this camera for the light

The summit and the base are often having different days. If the top is socked in while the base looks clear, expect flat light up high — which matters more for confidence than snow depth does. On a clear afternoon you can see a long way across the western Upper Peninsula from here.

The other two cameras

The chairlift cam shows the lift line and whether people are skiing. The Double Barrel cam points down one of the steeper runs and shows the actual snow surface.

Why local cameras beat a regional forecast

This is the Lake Superior snow belt. Snow bands are narrow and stubbornly local — it can be snowing hard on the mountain while Ironwood twelve miles away stays clear — so a county-level forecast is close to useless for deciding whether to drive up.

If the view looks right, the hill has 45 runs on nine chairlifts.
